The Effect of Cold Air Inhalation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Inhalation of cold air (-20°C) for four minutes provoked angina pectoris in four of 17 coronary disease patients at rest and in four of seven of the patients while they were paced at a heart rate level which was subanginal at room temperature. The cold air did not increase myocardial 02 consumption significantly, and the accompanying changes in systemic hemodynamic factors known to influence myocardial 02 consumption were minor. Coronary blood flow determined by the xenon clearance method did not change significantly. In 18 patients, cold air inhalation for 11/2 minutes caused no detectable constriction of coronary arteries visualized arteriographically. We conclude that angina pectoris induced by breathing cold air cannot be explained satisfactorily by a concurrent increase in myocardial work and 02 consumption. Although neither large coronary artery constriction nor generalized coronary arteriole constriction seem to be involved, some other specific effect of cold air inhalation on coronary vasomotion, perhaps affecting collaterals or coronary blood flow distribution, is suspected.

Endogenous nitric oxide inhibits bronchoconstriction induced by cold-air inhalation in guinea pigs: role of kinins.
Inhalation of cold air in guinea pigs increases total pulmonary resistance (RL), an effect that is mediated by kinins and tachykinins. Bronchoconstriction induced by bradykinin (BK) inhalation in guinea pigs is markedly inhibited by nitric oxide (NO) release from the airway epithelium. We investigated whether endogenous NO modulates the increase in RL induced by inhalation of cold air. In anest...

Nasopulmonary bronchomotor reflexes elicited by mechanical or irritant stimulation of the nose have been described in animals and asthmatic patients. However, few studies were devoted to the consequences of nasal breathing of cold and dry air or of only dry or only moist air on the bronchomotor control in normal individuals. The present study reported changes in interruption resistance (Rint) m...

In nine healthy subjects, cold stimuli were administered to the forehead and hand, to the oral and nasal cavities via ice cubes and to the bronchial system via inhalation of cold air (-25 degrees C). Blood pressure, heart rate and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) from the peroneal nerve were recorded. MSNA expressed as total activity increased during cold air inhalation, cooling of the ...
متن کاملEffect of inspired air conditions on exercise-induced bronchoconstriction and urinary CC16 levels in athletes.
Injury to the airway epithelium has been proposed as a key susceptibility factor for exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB). Our goals were to establish whether airway epithelial cell injury occurs during EIB in athletes and whether inhalation of warm humid air inhibits this injury. Twenty-one young male athletes (10 with a history of EIB) performed two 8-min exercise tests near maximal aer...

In another test, environmental air \vas either normal or -10°C, and four combinations of inspiratory and room air w...
